LeBron James's rookie cards are from the 2003-04 season, and the one most collectors chase is the 2003-04 Topps Chrome #111. As of late 2026, recent sales put it at about $2,100-3,550 in PSA 9 and about $8,750-18,250 in PSA 10, with the most recent PSA 10s near $14,500. Its refractor sells for about $21,000-24,000 in PSA 9 and around $60,000 in PSA 10. The paper 2003-04 Topps #221 brings roughly $7,500-10,000 in PSA 10 and a few hundred dollars raw. The 2003-04 Upper Deck #301 rookie is about $800 in PSA 10. At the very top sits the 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Rookie Patch Autograph, numbered to 99, whose copies have sold for about $324,000 to $1.72 million in Beckett 9. The famous $5.2 million sale in April 2021 was not that card: it was the rarer parallel numbered to 23, his jersey number, graded Beckett 9 with a 10 autograph, sold privately through PWCC.
Two honest notes. LeBron's market rose sharply in 2026; PSA 10 Chrome copies that sold for about $5,600 in 2025 have sold for two to three times that this year, and markets that move fast can move back. And the base rookies from other 2003 sets, printed in large numbers, are common: a raw copy in ordinary condition usually sells for $20-150.

How to identify and value a LeBron James rookie card, step by step
- Confirm the season. A true LeBron rookie is from 2003-04, shows him with the Cavaliers, and is dated 2003 on the back. Many cards show him in a high school uniform from 2002 and 2003 releases by smaller brands; they are not licensed NBA rookie cards and sell for much less. Cards from 2004-05 onward are not rookies.
- Read the brand and number. The key cards are Topps Chrome #111, Topps #221, Upper Deck #301 and the Exquisite Collection Rookie Patch Autograph. Bowman, Fleer, SP Authentic, Upper Deck Rookie Exclusives and many other 2003-04 sets also have LeBron rookies.
- Tell Topps from Topps Chrome. Chrome is printed on thick, metallic, glossy stock and is #111. The paper Topps card is #221. The design is similar, the values are not.
- Check for a refractor or parallel. Tilt a Chrome card under a single light. A refractor shows a rainbow sheen across the whole front. Look for a serial number stamped on the card; numbered parallels, including the gold refractor numbered to 50, are far scarcer.
- On an Exquisite card, read the serial. The Rookie Patch Autograph carries a serial number out of 99 on the regular version. A serial out of 23 marks the parallel. The patch, the on-card autograph and the serial must all be checked by a grading company, because this card is counterfeited.
- Look at condition the way a grader does. Corners, edges, surface and centering. Chrome surfaces scratch easily, and centering varies. Our guide on grading a card at home shows how.
- Check for reprints and fakes. The Chrome, the Topps and the Exquisite card are all faked. See how to spot a reprint sports card.
- Price from sold results on 130point, PSA auction prices realized or Card Ladder, for the exact card, parallel and grade.

The Exquisite card, explained
Upper Deck's Exquisite Collection launched in 2003-04 as a very expensive product, sold in boxes holding only a few cards. Its Rookie Patch Autograph cards combine an on-card signature, a piece of game-worn jersey and a serial number. LeBron's regular version is numbered to 99. A parallel version is numbered to 23, matching his jersey number, which makes it far scarcer. Both trade almost entirely in Beckett holders, and both are counterfeited, so a raw copy offered online deserves real caution. If you are not sure which version you are looking at, the serial number on the card answers it.
What moves the price
| Factor | What it does |
|---|---|
| Which card | Chrome, the refractors and Exquisite lead; most base cards are a different, cheaper market |
| Grade | A PSA 10 Chrome sells for four to five times a PSA 9 |
| Refractor or parallel | Multiplies the value many times; serial-numbered parallels most of all |
| Market timing | LeBron prices rose sharply in 2026 and have moved fast before |
| Grading company | PSA, BGS and SGC sell at different prices; Exquisite cards usually trade in BGS |
| Authenticity | Raw Chrome and Exquisite cards sell at a discount because fakes are common |
Common mistakes
- Pricing a high school card as a rookie. Cards of LeBron in his St. Vincent-St. Mary uniform are not licensed NBA rookies and sell for a fraction of the Topps and Upper Deck cards.
- Mixing up Topps #221 and Topps Chrome #111. Similar design, very different value.
- Calling every Exquisite LeBron a $5 million card. The record was the parallel numbered to 23. The regular version is numbered to 99, and both are rare cards most people will never hold.
- Treating a shiny card as a refractor. All Chrome cards are shiny. A refractor shows a rainbow.
- Using old price guides or asking prices. The 2026 market moved too fast for older figures. Use recent sold data.
- Not checking a slab. Look up the label's cert number on the grading company's website.
How WorthPic reads LeBron James card photos
WorthPic runs on the newest and most capable AI model available, tuned for exactly this kind of identification. From your photos it reads the year, brand, set and card number, tells a paper Topps from a Topps Chrome, looks for a refractor sheen, and reads any serial number, patch or autograph. It looks at visible condition: corners, edges, centering and obvious surface damage. On a graded card it reads the label and grade. It then gives a value range from recent sold results for that card in that condition.
What it cannot know from a photo is whether an autograph or patch is genuine, whether a card has been trimmed or altered, hairline scratches that only show under a lamp, or what grade a grading company will give. It identifies and estimates. It does not authenticate, grade or appraise.
What to photograph
- The front, straight on, in daylight, filling the frame.
- The back, straight on, so the card number and copyright year are readable.
- The card tilted under a single light, to show refractor sheen and surface scratches.
- Any serial number, patch or autograph close up.
- Each corner close up if the card looks sharp.
- The full label if it is graded, including the cert number.
When to get it looked at in person
Any clean Topps Chrome #111, any refractor or numbered parallel, and any card with a patch or autograph should go to PSA, BGS or SGC. Fees run from roughly $25 to a few hundred dollars depending on declared value. A clean Topps #221 is also worth grading at 2026 prices if it looks sharp. For a card that could bring five figures or more, a major auction house such as Heritage, Goldin or Fanatics Collect will give an estimate before consignment.
